We were introduced to Marius through the 'Single Homeless Project', a London-wide charity working to prevent homelessness. He had first arrived in the UK in 2012, working for a while in the Isle of Man before moving to London.
Marius had plenty of experience, having worked in both hospitality and manufacturing, but lost his job when the UK lockdown was introduced in March 2020. The Single Homeless Project assisted him with accommodation. On our end, we got to work helping him into employment.
Initially, Marius wanted to try out the role of kitchen porter - a role that offered the opportunity to work as part of a team, something he enjoyed doing. He had been looking for jobs via Facebook and asking friends, but to no avail.
With the help of service provision assistant Magda Saniuk, he used our CV builder to re-work his CV, emphasising the breadth and depth of his experience, and the wide range of positions he could apply for using his transferable skills. Magda also set him up on job-sites and helped him apply for other roles he liked the look of.
The responses were almost immediate! Marius had a strong CV and knew exactly how to go about finding work. "He just needed that initial push,” recalls Magda. "He has a really good attitude and he was keen to put himself out there, which always helps, but sometimes it's just a matter of knowing the tools you need, getting into the rhythm of making applications and building your confidence.
"When I caught up with him recently, he had moved to Manchester and got a job in a factory alongside a friend, packing soaps and shampoos. Not only that, but he was in the process of being helped into accommodation by a local agency, so he's getting back on his feet.
"We have employability clinics in Manchester every Saturday if he ever needs them - but I don't think he will!"
