New training programme for London organisations advising migrant workers

Migrant workers face significant barriers to justice, from lack of rights awareness, to language barriers, and perhaps most importantly the availability of high-quality advice. With support from the Greater London Authority, this summer Work Rights Centre is launching a new, free training programme for employment rights advisers and those seeking to begin their journeys into employment advice.

The training will cover employment law, employment tribunal procedure, and enforcement, and how to better support migrants facing workplace disputes.

This in-depth training programme will be delivered as a 5-week-long series of online workshops, with cohorts starting in June and September. It will include pre-reading and further reading materials, a selection of real-life case studies and small group discussions.

The sessions will cover topics such as:

  • Immigration status, right to work, and why it matters in the context of employment disputes;

  • Introduction to employment rights disputes;

  • Types of dismissals and how to evaluate them;

  • Protected characteristics and discrimination claims;

  • Exercising rights: ACAS notifications and ET claims

About the experts. Sessions will be delivered by the Work Rights Centre’s Head of Employment, Sarmila Bose and Head of Immigration, Luke Piper. Both are experienced solicitors and experts in providing employment and immigration advice to migrants.

Who can register? This programme is aimed at frontline advisers from London-based organisations, who are either keen to start offering advice in employment rights for migrant workers, or looking to improve the quality and scope of their existing advice. It will be of particular interest to small charities and community groups supporting London’s diverse groups of migrant workers.

When will the training take place?

  • Cohort 1: June - July 2025, weekly sessions.
  • Cohort 2: September - October 2025, weekly sessions.

How much does it cost? The training is completely free. Additionally, qualifying organisations, who take an active part in all sessions of the programme will be reimbursed for their time.
