After seemingly endless debate about the timing of this year’s general election, the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced that 4th July will be the day that the country goes to the polls. We’re finally here.

General elections are a time of great excitement, when we get to experience democracy in action. But they’re also a time of intense speculation, and in some cases, information overload. Migrants and other vulnerable people continue to experience wage theft, discrimination, and abuse at work - but which candidates will be tackling these issues head-on? The need for good information on these issues and proposed solutions has never been more urgent.

To help ensure the debate is well-informed, and that the next government is serious about protecting migrants and vulnerable workers’ rights, we’re launching the Work Rights Centre Election Watch.

What is Election Watch and what will we be doing?

In the run-up to polling day, our team will be monitoring party communications and policy announcements relevant to the welfare of migrant workers and vulnerable workers across the UK. Given the breadth of the conversation, we cannot guarantee to be exhaustive. However, we will closely review party manifestos, and do our best to scrutinise the key announcements that are relevant to our charitable mission and beneficiaries.

How can you contribute?

If, like us, you want to see the next government protect the welfare of migrants and vulnerable workers, here's how to contribute:

  • Follow us on X (Twitter), Facebook and LinkedIn to keep up with our analysis.
  • Email us pledges you’d like us to analyse, by writing to research@workrightscentre.org
  • Use your voice in hustings meetings to call on candidates to protect migrant and vulnerable workers. A hustings is a meeting where election candidates or parties debate policies and answer questions from the audience. This is a precious opportunity to discover what your local candidates stand for, raise awareness of issues you’d like them to work on, and hold them to account.

An important disclaimer. Work Rights Centre is a registered charity dedicated to supporting migrant workers and disadvantaged British nationals to access employment justice and improve their social mobility. We are independent - this means we do not support or endorse any political party or candidate. We’re launching Election Watch to ensure that the debate is well-informed, and that the next government understands the importance of protecting migrants and vulnerable workers’ rights.  Any communications that we publish as part of Election Watch are informative only - they are not intended as an endorsement or otherwise of any specific political party, candidate or agenda.

Our frontline team are incredibly busy and will continue to be until polling day. To support the Work Rights Centre in our efforts to assist migrant workers please consider making a donation.
