The Work Rights Centre is looking to widen its Board of Trustees. If you have a real passion for justice, and share our vision of a world where everyone has access to decent work and social mobility regardless of their immigration status, we want to hear from you.
What do trustees do?
Trustees are expert volunteers who oversee the governance of the charity. They shape its strategic direction, scrutinise finances and resource allocation, and support the staff team in developing the policies and procedures needed to comply with legislation and provide an excellent service for the public benefit. Above all, trustees have an opportunity to make real, lasting social change.
Who are we looking for?
Employment law expertise. Complex employment rights cases are at the heart of what we do. We’re looking for someone with good employment law expertise to provide strategic guidance, as we take on ambitious new cases.
Financial expertise. As we prepare to bid farewell to one of our two treasurers, who has reached the end of her six year maximum mandate, we are also looking for a board member with expertise in charity accounting and financial management.
We particularly welcome applications from people who can combine learned and lived experience of the issues we are trying to solve, and can identify with the experiences of our service users.
What time commitment is expected?
The Board of Trustees meets four times a year. Quarterly meetings are held online, typically lasting 90 min, and are a chance to understand the charity’s performance against strategic objectives, vote on key decisions, and feedback. Our annual vision day is held in person, and is a precious opportunity for trustees to join all staff in reviewing key achievements, reflect on the year ahead, and begin formulating strategic objectives.
Many trustees also work closer with senior staff at subcommittee level. Once a quarter before every main board meeting, Treasurers meet with the Deputy CEO to review the charity’s management accounts and performance against budget and fundraising targets. We are now keen to establish a Strategic Employment Litigation committee, to meet with the Head of Employment and offer guidance on our more ambitious employment tribunal cases, which sit at the intersection of employment and immigration.
How do I apply?
Please read the role description, and send your CV and a brief cover letter detailing why you would like to join the board to the CEO, at olivia.vicol@workrightscentre.org We will acknowledge and review all applications. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to meet the Chair of Trustees, Rob McNeil. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to write to us.
