The Work Rights Centre is looking for new volunteers

By Luca Pace - 31 January 2022

Is social justice a subject close to your heart? Do you speak a language other than English? We'd love to hear from you!

The Work Rights Centre is looking to widen its frontline volunteer team. This is a great opportunity for university students specialising in law or social sciences, or for anyone looking for a career pivot to the third sector. It's a change to give something back to migrant communities and gain experience in social welfare law.

The role

As part of our volunteering team, you'll be shadowing experienced caseworkers. Every day brings something new. You might be working on:

  • Employability - by helping someone draft their first CV;
  • Access to benefits - by helping people who struggle with IT literacy to understand and access Universal Credit;
  • Employment casework -  by helping our team to recover unpaid wages or challenge unfair dismissals;
  • Communication -  by raising awareness of our mission on social media and joining our staff in outreach sessions.

The commitment

As a volunteer, we'd expect you to commit a minimum of four hours per week, for a minimum of three months. There's a lot to learn, but you'll get up to speed in no time. And believe us, it's worth it! Our team helped recover over £157,000 in unpaid wages for migrants - and many of our staff members started off as volunteers.

The candidate

We're looking for a motivated volunteer with a real interest in migrants' rights. Knowledge of social welfare law is desirable but not essential, as long as you are keen to learn. Essentially, we want to see that you:

  • Have a real interest in social mobility.
  • Speak another language, and can engage with our migrant communities (Romanian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Spanish, and more).
  • Are an excellent communicator, who can build rapport with anyone.
  • Are able to organise your time and can commit to a regular four hours per week, for at least three months.

How to apply

Submit your CV and cover letter via email to contact@workrightscentre.org. We will get in touch with you as soon as possible with further information. You can read more about the position here.
