Employment status in the UK is determined on the basis of practice, and not according to a contract. Whenever a dispute arises Employment Tribunals consider a number of criteria such as: who decides how the work is done, how regular the payment is, or who provides materials. While judges are clear that every case is weighed independently, this questionnaire attempts to integrate the official criteria in order to provide you with a sense of direction before you go to court.

If you work for and get paid by more than one person or business, answer the questionnaire for each job separately. This is because you could be self-employed in one job, whilst being employed in another.

It is important to remember that the results are only indicative. Only a tribunal can determine your employment status with certainty, and grant you access to the associated rights.
